Morning Vibes With Dr. Jerry - the First
Hello and welcome to
#MorningVibesWithDrJerryTheFirst-Episode 229
Title: It's Time To
'warm-down' Our Minds Of Issues Before We Sleep.
This story made a whole
lot of sense to me and I am sure it would to you too
Once upon a time, a
Professor of Psychology whose students regarded as "weird" walked into
an Auditorium filled with students for her lecture and in her right hand was a
glass of water that was filled to the middle.
She raised the glass of
water up and as the students were expecting the typical question “Is the glass
half empty or glass half full”?
Instead, with a smile on her face, the Professor asked,
"Class, what am I
doing?
The students looked one to
the another and the brightest of them said "Ma you are holding a glass cup
half filled with water in mid air"
That was a correct answer
the Professor said and asked the Class to applaud the young man who gave the
answer.
And still holding the
glass cup up she asked again “And How heavy is this glass of water I’m
holding?”
Students shouted out
answers ranging from eight ounces to a couple pounds.
Laughing out loud, she
told them that they were all wrong for two reasons firstly no one can ever
obtain the absolute weight of any object just by guessing and secondly From my
perspective, the absolute weight of this glass of water doesn’t really matter.
she said
It all depends on how long I hold
it.
If I hold it for a minute or two, it’s fairly light.
If I hold it for an hour straight, its weight
might make my arm ache a
little.
If I hold it for a day straight, my arm will
likely cramp up and feel completely numb and paralyzed, forcing me to drop the glass to the
floor.
In each case, the weight
of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it feels to
me.
As the students shook
their heads in agreement, she continued, “Your stresses and worries in life are
very much like this glass of water.
Think about them for a while
and nothing
happens.
Think about them a bit longer and you begin to ache a little.
Think about them all day long, and you will
feel completely numb and paralyzed – incapable of doing anything else until you drop
them.
The moral: It’s important
to remember to let go of your stresses and worries.
No matter what happens during the day, as early in the evening as you
can, put all your burdens down.
Don’t carry them through the night and into the
next day with you.
Remember the Good Book says
"sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof"
If you still feel the weight of yesterday’s stress, it’s a strong sign that it’s time to put the
glass down.
My personal take-away: It's
probably easier said than done but, if we can 'warm-down' our minds of issues
before we sleep, I'm sure you will have less of a 'weight' when you wake
up next morning.
And over time, 'warming-down' our minds will be easier.
