Morning Vibes With Dr. Jerry - the First
Hello and welcome to
#MorningVibesWithDrJerryTheFirst-Episode 67
Title: Work
While It Is Day, For The Night Cometh When No Man Can Work!!
I
am sure those who are Christians can relate this topic with a Biblical Verse
and those who are not, must have been hearing it every now and then. When we
hear of work, what usually comes to mind is that which we labour at, to provide
for food and meat on our dining tables and other comforts of life but I am
looking at work from different other perspectives. There is more to work than
earning money to provide food and drinks and go on vacations or visit other fun
places. Preparing to be old is one such work that seems to be neglected in our
clime. When we are young and active, we never bother to think of how the
twilight years will be like, we eat and drink and smoke and sniff and snuff
whatever comes our way in the name of enjoying our lives, we do not care any
damn about the consequences of such habits on our bodies (and even souls), we
think that the evidence of good living is a protruding belly or the number of
bottles we send "home" every night. We celebrate our capacity to harm
our bodies by the amount of liquour we consume, sometimes some peeps are so
high, they literally walk on air like floating air bags. No it is not. The time
to prepare to be old is actually when we are young and have the capacity to say
no to certain habits and indulgences. Life and nature caution moderation in all
things, sure no one is going to be here forever and since what we eat and drink
are all we can take away from here, it doesn't then mean that we should indulge
in drinking and eating more than is necessary for the body's needs so as to
kill ourselves before our times are up. However, despite what we subject our
bodies to when we are young, we are amazed to notice that in its resilience,
the body takes all the insult and assault and then wait for us to cross 30,
then it begins to get back at us - hypertension, diabetes, stroke, dementia,
chronic fatigue - just name them, most are a result of how we handled our
bodies while we had the opportunity to manage her. When we are young, we manage
our body, but when we are old our body manages us and we get back from her just
what we gave to her when it was our own turn. If you want your body to manage
you well in old age, then manage her well while you are young. The time to do
the work of managing your body is when you have all the opportunity to treat
her nicely and respectfully, if you fail to do that and it catches up with you
in old age, when you would have become all pipes and whizzes and drones; then
the next best thing to do is to sing the "nunc dimitis"
